Dr Reddy's Risperidone

Dr Reddy's Risperidone is the latest product to be launched in New Zealand and will be available for sale from 1 February 2010.

Risperidone Tablets contain 1mg, 2mg, 3mg & 4mg of risperidone. Risperidone Tablets are a FULLY FUNDED PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE. Normal doctor’s visit fees apply. Risperidone Tablets are used for the treatment of; sudden (acute) and long-lasting (chronic) psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia (a condition that affects the way people think, feel and act), the control of mania in people with bipolar disorder, the behavioural problems in people with dementia (a decline in mental ability) and those who are intellectually disabled, autism in children and adolescents.

Contraindications: Do Not Use if you are allergic to risperidone or any of the other ingredients. Warnings & Precautions: Pregnancy and breastfeeding; use of other medicines such as dopamine agonists eg Levodopa, phenothiazines used to treat psychosis; tricyclic antidepressants or benzodiazepines used to treat anxiety and help you sleep; beta blockers used to treat high blood pressure; pain killers or antihistamines; medicines to treat pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder; medicines to relieve severe nausea and vomiting; diuretic medicines such as furosemide used to treat high blood pressure or swelling in parts of the body from fluid build-up; carbamazepine to treat epilepsy or severe facial pain; fluoxetine or paroxetine for depression. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines including those you buy from a pharmacy or health food shop. Caution if intolerant to lactose. Talk to you doctor before starting this medicine if you have; dementia, suffered a stroke or transient ischemic attack, heart or blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, a heart disorder called atrial fibrillation, Parkinson’s Disease, epilepsy (seizures or fits), liver or kidney disease, suffer from dehydration, low blood potassium levels, breast cancer, disease of the pituitary gland, tardive dyskinesia (a reaction to some medicines with uncontrollable twitching or jerking movements of the arms and legs), Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a serious reaction to some medicines with a sudden increase in body temperature, extremely high blood pressure and severe convulsions). Risperidone and alcohol can cause drowsiness, caution when driving or operating machinery.

Side Effects: Common; difficulty sleeping, agitation, anxiety and headaches, increase in appetite and weight gain. Less common; sleepiness, feeling tired, dizziness particularly when standing up, trembling, heart palpitations, difficulty concentrating, constipation, heartburn, feeling or being sick, stomach ache, skin rashes and other allergic reactions such as itching, swollen face or lips. Occasionally; strokes or transient ischemic - If you experience sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arms or legs especially on one side, or instances of slurred speech seek urgent medical attention. Rarely; a desire to drink large amounts of water, marked changes in body temperature, uncontrollable movements, mainly of the face and tongue.
